Anne Rice
Her stories are what began me on my journey through the various character lives and distant worlds that I have enjoyed over the years. There is a constant war going on in my heart between which series of books I love more, The Lives of the Mayfair Witches or The Vampire Chronicles.  Although she does tend to describe scenery in too much detail for my taste, her ability to create unforgettable characters and weave a complex tale spanning centuries of time, intermingled with scorching scenes of lust and desire are unparalleled.

Frank Herbert
The Dune series of books is essential reading for any science fiction, fantasy enthusiast.  His style of writing is hands down my favorite.  When I first finished reading Dune, I was extremely hesitant in continuing the series because I was afraid of being let down.  How could any of the other books be possibly as good a read as this one??!!!  Boy was I extremely and pleasantly surprised!!  Each book in this series outdid the last and I couldn’t wait to read the next.  In my eyes, Frank Herbert is truly THE MASTER!

Terry Brooks
I have had many tough, long, painful days at work after staying up all night reading his books.  He is such a masterful story teller that I find myself unable to tear my eyes away from the pages of his books.  His uncanny ability to constantly bring the reader to a new "cliffhanger" from chapter to chapter, book to book, or series to series is amazing.  The worlds and characters I have experienced within his words are truly unforgettable.

RA Salvatore
No one writes a fight scene like him.  His name alone sounds like a warrior ready to do battle!  But what I have found most interesting about his writing is his ability to balance the swashbuckling swordplay with political intrigue, romance, and most importantly philosophical musings.  From the world of Faerun to the lands of Corona, I feel as if I am being challenged to evaluate my very own ideals every time I embark on a new journey with his characters.  And let’s not forget those fight scenes!!!

Lian Hearn
She has a very straightforward, easy style of writing that I greatly enjoy.  The first time I ever cried reading a book was while I was reading Across The Nightingale Floor.  With her Tales of the Otori series of books she has created a storyline that I wish would never end.

Stephen King
He is truly in a league of his own.  He has written many works and I have read a good portion of them.  I can honestly say that not one of them has ever let me down.  There have been times where his stories may start off slow, but they always suck me in and spit me out satisfied and in awe of his mastery of the written word.

J.R.R. Tolkien
What can I write that hasn’t already been written about Tolkien.  I had, by no design of my own, just finished reading The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings when the first trailer for the movies came out.  It was an amazing experience for me to watch the first film, The Fellowship of the Ring, with the story so fresh in my mind (I still wish they didn’t have to cut out Tom Bombadil!).  His writings are truly timeless.

Michael Moorcock
The creator of one of my favorite characters ever, Elric of Melnibone.  I have a love and hate relationship with his work.  I have to be in the right mood and state of mind to read his stories, because once I begin down the paths into the multiverse he has created it is always a wild ride!  He is truly the mad man of everyone on this list.
