The Annotated Elminster

What up fantasy book lovers!!!  I just added another book(or is it technically books in this case?) to my ever growing list of  "read books", The Annotated Elminster-Collector’s Edition.  This book contains 3 books (The Making of A Mage, Elminster in Myth Drannor, and The Temptation of Elminster) written by Ed Greenwood, the creator of the Forgotten Realms, which chronicle the adventures of Elminster.

Unlike many who might be reading this entry, my only foray into the world of the Forgotten Realms was through the written words of RA Salvatore.  I have always wanted to read what the creator of the Forgotten Realms has to offer, but I just never seemed to get around to it.  So when I came across this hardcover book during one of my weekly(sometimes daily) pilgrimages to Barnes&Nobles, I jumped at the chance to finally dive in to Ed Greenwood’s tales.

I must admit I was a little worried that these books might not live up to the standards of RA Salvatore, but I have to say that I was quite impressed.  Although characters seem to get introduced and promptly killed off faster than the speed of sound, Greenwood’s spell battles are thrilling and the histories that unfold are captivating.  If you are like me and haven’t yet read anything by Ed Greenwood, the story of the beginnings of Elminster the Mage is an extremely enjoyable one and I do highly recommend this book.  If you have already read the works contained in this book , there are annotations on all 3 books that you might find interest in(personally I ignored them for now, maybe I’ll read them sometime in the future when I’ve read more of his books)

I’m interested to hear comments on Ed Greenwood and any of his other books anyone recommends.  Don’t be shy!!!

Top 5 Best “Cheesy” Sci-Fi Fantasy Movies

Something interesting happened to me the other day.  I recently signed up for NetFlix, and decided I wanted to request a movie I hadn’t seen in years.  While perusing the selection under Science Fiction, I came across the perfect choice!!

The movie KRULL.

I could not wait to receive this movie and have a chance to relive the awe and wonder I experienced as a child when I last saw this film, now with my adult eyes.  The day the movie arrived in the mail, I repeatedly berated my wife for never having seen it and bombarded her with constant praise and hype for KRULL, using such phrases as "this is a CLASSIC!"; "this is the HOTNESS!" and so on. (my wife claims I am the most annoying man on the planet, but that’s another story).

So we get comfortable to watch the movie, I pop in the DVD, press play and the "HOTNESS" begins…

After about 5 minutes of the movie, all I can think is "WHAT THE F—!!!!!!!!!! This movie is horrible!! "Is this the right movie?  Was there possibly another KRULL movie made?  Am I crazy?  Did I slip into another dimension?!!!!

Unfortunately, this was the movie I "remember", and yes my wife is going into the kitchen to grab a knife and stab me (just kidding).   Not only was the story "cheesy", the acting was horrible, the special effects were laughable, it was just bad on so many levels.  But it was entertaining in some weird, twisted way.

As traumatized as I was by this experience, I decided to create my Top 5 Best "Cheesy" Sci-Fi Fantasy Movies as listed below:

KRULL

THE NEVERENDING STORY

THE LAST STARFIGHTER

THE BEASTMASTER

MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE

Welcome to Fantasy Book Blogger!

For me, it all began in the early 1990’s on a hot, humid, sunny day in New York.  There I was, poking fun at one of my friends for spending all of her time reading a book while we were hanging out at the pool in FDR State Park. I was full of teenage angst and male bravado, but little did I know that my life was going to change with the following few words, "I dare you to read this book! I bet you can’t put it down!"

What are you kidding me?!!! It’s 85 degrees out, the sun is shining, and there are half naked women in bikinis everywhere. There is no way in hell some BOOK is going to tear me away from all this!!

Well… The book was The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice, and as you probably already guessed, I couldn’t put it down!!!

I haven’t stopped reading since, and my love and appetite for reading good books continues to grow. I think it would be interesting to read some fellow book lovers "first time" stories.
